Warp Drive

Warp drive

Warp drive is a theoretical spacecraft propulsion system mentioned in many science fiction movies. Besides conventional rockets and any other technology we have developed, it would take us decades to build such technology. With accessibility to this technology travel with speed faster than speed of light is possible. We know that it is not possible for any spacecraft propulsion system to reach the speed of light as they cannot provide enough kinetic energy and according to Einstein's theory of general relativity mass would increase as speed increase and at speed of light mass would become infinite which is not possible, but by the concept of warp drive requirement of such amount  kinetic energy is of no need. All we need is a spacecraft which is able to distort space-time, It will compress space-time in front of it and expand at rear so what is happening is spacecraft will not move but space-time around it  will also move with it and problem of kinetic energy is solved all we need is spacecraft with warp drive technology. Once we achieve this milestone we can visit Mars or maybe the nearest solar system in just minutes or seconds. By warp drive if we achieve speed of one light year per hour then it would take us 23 years to travel across the milky way.

Hypothetically it seems easy to imagine such spacecraft but it takes more than imagination and technology we have. Of course building such technology which enables hyperfast travel will require huge energy in the form of very dense negative/exotic matter(Dark Matter). Spacecraft should have a torus( It is a surface of revolution generated by a revolving circle in 3-Dimension ) oscillating at high frequency so energy in torus is continuously changed and it softens the space-time around it. It creates a spherical bubble of steady space-time at center so spacecraft never have to exceed the speed of light with respect to bubble space-time reference. To simply understand we can consider a ball as a bubble of space-time  and it is travelling with speed of light but inside it the air which is our inner space-time remains stationary. The above theory was studied and given by Dr. Harold White of NASA’s Eagleworks Laboratories. According to him if we go into Hyper-Space(Higher dimensional space-time) we would cease to interact electromagnetically with anything. So is Warp Drive possible? YES, Both mathematically and experimentally it is possible. We will discuss hyper-space in upcoming blogs.

Scientist named Serguei Vladilenovich Krasnikov proposed an idea which was similar to warp drive and did not need torus, it is called Krasnikov tube. It is a method which involves wrapping space-time around tunnels. We can compare it with a type of wormhole with the other end at another point of space. This theory also violated some concepts but again it's totally hypothetical.

Highest speed at which humans have travelled was 39,897km/h which was achieved by astronauts of Apollo 10 mission conducted by NASA. There are many theoretical and fictional propulsion systems by which travelling at the speed of light is possible of which some are fusion drive, Bussard ramjet, Hypedrive and many others. Of which some allow travel faster than speed of light and some provide high acceleration with less fuel consumption. Scientists and astronauts are making their efforts to make space travel faster and efficient. We might be able to develop such technology in at least a decade, and start to colonize other planets.
